The local community and territory

Habitat and Fauna

One of the first points to be discussed when starting a new project, is the site where it will take place. FERA always pays attention to the surrounding area with utmost care, avoiding any areas which should be protected. At this stage of the project, we are assisted and supported by Natura 2000, an ecological network that is spread across the entire European Union and established under the Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC. It’s aim is to ensure the long-term preservation of natural habitats as well as species of flora and fauna which are threatened or rare at EU level.

Wind analysis

This is undertaken only on suitable areas and conducted with specific software which allows precise and constant measurement.

Thanks to anemometric studies, we have identified sites with excellent wind conditions, that are optimal for installation. Production data of all installed systems are in line with projections from the planning phase. On sites that are under development, the Environment Office carries out at least one year monitoring avifauna (birds) and chiropterofauna (bats). Even if not specifically requested by the Region. The results of this monitoring are essential to fine tune the design and lay-out of the plant. If one or more of the monitoring findings highlight critical factors (e.g. migratory passage or roosts in the vicinity), the project will not continue.

At the same time as fauna monitoring, flora analyses are carried out, with studies in preparation for organising an environmental restoration plan.

FERA is a member of the National Wind and Fauna Observatory set up by ANEV (National Wind Energy Association) and ISPRA (Institute for Environmental Protection and Research).

The objective of the Observatory is to reinforce environmental protection whilst at the same time, promoting wind farm development on Italian territory, in a way that is attentive to the conservation of biodiversity (from the ANEV website).
